Cowboys' Mike McCarthy not interested in Cam Newton: 'We're very excited' about the QBs we have

Almost immediately after the New England Patriots surprisingly released 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player Cam Newton earlier this week, fans and analysts alike attempted to predict which clubs would take a flier on him ahead of the regular season.

The Dallas Cowboys theoretically checked several boxes. Starting signal-caller Dak Prescott still hasn't faced a live opposing defense since he suffered a gruesome compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle last October, and he's been slowed by a shoulder strain throughout the summer. Unproven commodity Cooper Rush would be the Cowboys' QB2 if they began the campaign at the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight rather than next Thursday.

According to Nick Shook of the NFL's website, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy didn't seem too interested in adding Newton or anybody else to his QB room before Sept. 9.

"I think he has a ton of football left," McCarthy said of Newton. "But we're very excited about the group that we have."

Back on Tuesday, Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera appeared to close the door on reuniting with Newton, his former starter when both were employed by the Carolina Panthers.

Logic suggests Newton will eventually receive calls from teams once quarterbacks inevitably go down to injuries this fall. For now, all indications are the 32-year-old will be watching Week 1 of the campaign on television rather than from a sideline.
